uniform: Exchange

Uniform is a collective of female artists who have long been interested in employing underground sub-culture as a means to both acknowledge and create accessible, non-comformist sites of exchange. This project utilises the language and history of noise-punk as a way of exploring a sister-city relationship between Auckland and Dunedin. For the past thirty years, a community between these two places has been fostered through writing, record labels, share-housing and workshops. Nevertheless, points of difference between the two cities become exaggerated. In her novel State of Siege, writer Janet Frame described this difference as something situated between the idealised subtropical “up north”, where oranges grow, and the southern stoicism, heavy as a monument on the headlands. Despite the temptation to turn away from such provincialisms, Uniform wish to emphasise and embrace them.
