Rehutai
Shannon Te Ao and Arapeta HakuraFor this group exhibition, Arapeta Hākura (Whanaunga, Ruanui, Mahuta, Koata, Te Wehi, Kahu, Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri, Ngāpuhi, Porou) and Shannon Te Ao (Ngāti Tūwharetoa,Ngāti Wairangi, Te Pāpaka-o-Māui) were invited to make work in response to chosen taonga from the collection of Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum. In doing so, these artists address the ways collections, archives, and the cultural heritage they represent are remembered, revised, or re-enacted. Musing on history as a constant state of becoming, Rehutai embraces the dynamic relationship between the contemporary and the historical through Te Ao Māori. Brought into reciprocal dialogue with the work of contemporary artists, the vibrations of chosen taonga are re-established, illuminating possibilities for knowledge to be carried and shared over time. This exhibition is made in partnership with Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum, co-curated by Nigel Borell, James Gatt and Andrea Low.
