The sound of a setting sun is Fatma Bucak’s first solo exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere. Bringing together a selection of recent works by the artist, alongside a newly commissioned installation and performance video, the exhibition charts Bucak’s ongoing conceptual and poetic approaches to loss. Working across photography, performance, sound, video, and installation, Bucak addresses the consequences of ecological collapse and geopolitical tension, often by highlighting the impacts of human activity on animals and plants.

Bucak studied Philosophy at Istanbul University and History of Art and Etching in Italy at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts before completing her MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in London. She was 2023-2024 Fellow in Visual Arts at the American Academy in Rome as the winner of the 2023-2024 Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT Prize. She was named one of the Royal Photographic Society's 'Hundred Heroines', recognizing women's achievements in photography and arts. Bucak has exhibited at the MOCA Toronto, PinchukArtCenter Kyiv, the Jewish Museum NY, Art in General, Palazzo Esposizioni, Castello di Rivoli, Kunsthaus Dresden, Brown University David Winton Bell Gallery, Biennale de Kinshasa, Venice Biennale with PinchukArtCenter, Goteborg Biennale, Venice Biennale Italian Pavilion, MAMAC Nice, MoMA's Non-Fiction Films, ARTER Istanbul, Z33 Hasselt and Fondazione Merz. She earned a fellowship at the Columbia University Italian Academy for Advanced Studies and was an artist-in-resident at ISCP in Brooklyn, New York. She was a winner of the 9th Italian Council. Bucak directed the documentary film Almost Married, which premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam and co-curated a year-long performance series project, Transition, at YKY, Istanbul. Bucak is a Novo Nordisk Foundation Artistic Research Fellow in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
