Introducing young students to fine art through a wide range of drawing media and ways of working. Classes are practical and fun while taught in a structured, nurturing environment. Students will doodle, draw from observation and from photographic reference, and use sketching both as a preliminary exercise and as a finished outcome. Emphasis is placed on thinking visually, developing looking skills, and learning the basic principles of art: line, tone and composition. Exercises train students to look and re-look, to draw the object itself and the space around it (negative space). We use continuous line and blind contour drawing to help the eye see the subject rather than an idea of it.
Courage and experimentation are central to the learning process. Making drawings involves risk and the possibility of failure; we treat those attempts as essential learning steps that accumulate into more confident, considered work. Teaching is object based to develop critical thinking and a deeper appreciation for the visual arts. Wherever possible the class spends time in the gallery viewing original works, and tutors bring art history and contemporary practice into the studio so students learn to think creatively, solve problems and work both collaboratively and independently.
Suitable for 6 - 13 year olds.
