Introducing young students to painting through a range of materials, techniques and ways of working. Classes are practical and engaging while taught in a structured, nurturing environment. Students will work with acrylic and water based paints, exploring colour, brushwork, layering and surface. Painting is approached both as a process of observation and as a means of imaginative expression. Emphasis is placed on learning how to see, mix colour, and organise the picture surface using core principles such as composition, colour, tone, balance and rhythm.
Experimentation and confidence are central to the class. Students are encouraged to take risks, revise their work and understand that painting develops through trial and adjustment. Teaching is object based to support visual thinking and problem solving, and wherever possible the class spends time in the gallery looking at original paintings. Tutors introduce art history and contemporary painting through studio practice, helping students learn to think creatively, work collaboratively and develop independent approaches to making.
Ages 6 - 13, all materials provided.
