Introducing young students to the world of three dimensional making through a wide range of materials and hands on techniques. Classes are practical and playful while taught in a structured, nurturing environment. Students will work with clay, papier mâché, cardboard, wire and found materials to explore form, structure, balance and surface. Emphasis is placed on thinking visually in space, developing manual skills and learning basic sculptural principles: scale, proportion, volume and texture. Exercises encourage experimentation with armatures, modelling, assemblage and surface treatment so children learn to translate ideas into physical objects.
Courage and curiosity are central to the process. Sculpture involves making, testing and adjusting; we treat unsuccessful tries as essential steps toward stronger work. Teaching is object based to develop problem solving and critical thinking, and wherever possible the class visits the gallery to see original sculptures. Tutors bring art history and contemporary practice into the studio so students learn to think creatively, work collaboratively and develop independent making skills.
Suitable for ages 6-13.
