23 AUG – 23 NOV
GALLERIES FOUR & FIVE
Working between abstraction and figuration, Anoushka Akel has developed a unique repertoire derived from her close study of the formations and sensations that shape our experiences of the world. Ifs brings together paintings, prints, drawings, and collages produced by Akel since 2012, tracing the development of her inquisitive language over this period. Built around motifs central to her practice—eyes, tongues, teeth, throats, hands, ribs, spines, trunks, and waves—this is the first exhibition to chart Akel’s overarching approach to image-making, which seeks understanding through the distillation of her chosen subjects. By isolating fragments of broader bodies and networks, Akel asks us to closely examine their independent functions and meanings—how and why we see, speak, touch, move—as well as the extent to which these perceived ‘parts’ are thought of as ‘whole’. The title ‘Ifs’ is a conditional term that relays the contingency of such fragments.
