Twice Dashper Bambury

In many ways, Stephen Bambury and Julian Dashper are an unlikely pairing. Both innovative and influential, they represent different poles in the New Zealand art discourse that they have helped to shape. Dashper was a conceptualist, the primacy of his work lay in its intellectual innovation. He was more interested in ideas than in the particularities of a medium, he moved through painting, sculpture, and 'arrangement' (apparently he disliked the term 'installation) to suit the particulars of a given work. His influence on New Zealand art and culture has continued to grow since his untimely death in 2009. Bambury, on the other hand, is a painter through and through. His work is deeply immersed in modernist painting discourse, and has remained centred in abstract painting for the past forty years. He spends his time living and working between New Zealand and Europe.

Julian McKinnon is an Auckland-based artist and writer. He has recently completed a PhD at Elam School of Fine Arts, The University of Auckland, focusing on contemporary painting discourse.
