Join Kate Newby, judge of the 2024 Portage Ceramic awards, for a guided walkthrough of this year’s exhibition. In this talk you will gain insights into her selection process and learn what drew her to different works. This year Newby faced the difficult task of narrowing down 257 entries to just 40 finalists. The Portage was established in 2001 is a hallmark event for Aotearoa’s ceramics community, showcasing some of the best work being made, and serving as a platform for dialogue about developments in the field.
Newby has family ties to the West Coast and has established a global reputation as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most exciting artists working within the field of expanded Ceramics. She was awarded the Walters Prize in 2012 and received a Doctor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland in 2015. She currently lives and works in Floresville, Texas.
