Portage 22 – Judge’s tour and events

This summer Te Uru has on show a suite of clay-based exhibitions including, opening on this day, the Portage Ceramic Awards 22, our annual showcase of contemporary ceramics; also newly opened, Earth posters, a collaboration between artist Fiona Jack and writer Courtney Sina Meredith; and Onewherowhero, featuring work by Kelston Intermediate students, coordinated by artist Carla Ruka and supported by the Ministry of Education’s Creatives in Schools programme.

Whether you’re in town for Portage or exploring the area for the Open Studios Waitākere weekend, make sure you visit Te Uru on Saturday afternoon for a specially scheduled feast of gallery talks and events:
1pm: Karl Chitham, judge of the 2022 Portage Ceramic Awards, gives a guided tour of this year’s exhibition and offers insights about his selection.
3pm: The Ceramics Association of New Zealand presents a talk with leading ceramic artist Carla Ruka, known for large-scale forms made with a unique coiling technique. Ruka will discuss her work as an indigenous artist and member of the Māori clay collective Ngā Kaihanga Uku.
4pm: We celebrate Fiona Jack and Courtney Sina Meredith’s new text and clay collaboration, Earth Posters.
