Barry Barclay's The Kaipara Affair (Director's Cut)

As part of the exhibition From the Shore, Te Uru is presenting a special Director’s Cut screening of Barry Barclay’s feature-length documentary film, The Kaipara Affair, on Saturday 13th October, 1pm.

The Kaipara Affair is an amazingly layered and provocative work that centres on disputes over fishing rights in the Kaipara Harbour, taking us inside the struggle of Kaipara locals to obtain government support to rescue their depleted fisheries.

From the Shore brings together contemporary works that echo the strategies and philosophies of indigenous filmmakers Barry Barclay and Merata Mita. The exhibition takes its title from Barclay’s metaphor of indigenous cinema as ‘a camera on the shore’ that reverses the direction of the colonial gaze.

The Kaipara Affair is presented in partnership with Nga Taonga.
